AirLive wireless outdoor CPE has been a favorite among ISP and networking professionals. Beside state-of-the-art design and using only top quality components, comprehensive testing is also a key to our success. At AirLive, we put our products through the most demanding tests to ensure you will only receive the highest performing and top quality devices from us.

In this report, we will take a look at how AirLive Wireless Outdoor CPEs perform in 20km, 24km and 32km in distance.

20KM Wireless Outdoor Test

Background:

The test was conducted on July 15, 2009 along the East Coast of Taiwan. Weather condition is sunny with partial clouds and light interferences.

The distance between the 2 testing sites at Tamkang University Lanyang Campus (N 24°49’19.20”, E 121°43’36.48”) and Sanching Temple (N 24°38’22.74”, E 121°43’51.03”) is approximately 20.18 kilometers. (view map)

The following devices were tested:

5GHz

  • AirMax5 with built in 14dBi antenna (pictured right)
  • WHA-5500CPE with built in 18dBi antenna

2.4GHz

  • WH-5420CPE with external 24dBi antenna (WAE-2424GR)

Conclusion:

5GHz spectrum: For a 20KM point-to-point connection, we recommend the use of AirMax5 with built in antenna as it can reach up to 7.1Mbps in throughput. For greater throughput, you may consider using WHA-5500CPE with built in antenna (up to 14.3Mbps)

2.4GHz spectrum: Together with an external antenna, WH-5420CPE can reach 20KM with a good throughput. In subsequence tests, we will see that it can even reach a longer distance. For WH-5420CPE with built in antenna, the recommended distance is about 15KM.

24KM Wireless Outdoor Test

Background:

The test was conducted on August 17, 2009 along the East Coast of Taiwan. Weather condition is sunny with partial clouds and light interferences.

The distance between the 2 testing sites at Shangsin Garden (N 24°50’57.90”, E 121°47’14.67”) and Sanching Temple (N 24°38’22.74”, E 121°43’51.03”) is approximately 24.01 kilometers. (view map)

Conclusion:

5GHz spectrum: For a 24KM point-to-point connection, we recommend the use of WHA-5500CPE with built in antenna as it can reach up to 10.4Mbps in throughput. For less demanding applications, you may also consider AirMax5 with built in antenna (up to 5.5Mbps). This is a breakthrough performance for compact size CPE.

32KM Wireless Outdoor Test

Background:

The test was conducted on July 29, 2009 along the East Coast of Taiwan. Weather condition is sunny with occasional showers and light interferences.

The distance between the 2 testing sites at Yin Fang Harbor (N 24°54’13.74”, E 121°52’06.79”) and Sanching Temple (N 24°38’22.74”, E 121°43’51.03”) is approximately 32.30 kilometers. (view map)

Note: As the location is at sea level, there are obstructions in the First Fresnel Zone, which is caused by ground level. Thus tests are not conducted in ideal conditions

The following devices were tested:

5GHz

  • AirMax5 with external 29dBi antenna (WAE-5029GR)
  • WHA-5500CPE with external 29dBi antenna (WAE-5029GR)

Conclusion:

5GHz spectrum: Even in non-ideal weather and location conditions AirLive 5GHz devices exceed all expectation and maintain connectivity in 32km with a good throughput (with the use of external antenna). WHA-5500CPE is recommended for its better throughput.

2.4GHz spectrum: WH-5420CPE performance (with the use of external antenna) in 32km is excellent. With a 70% signal strength and 15.58Mbps in throughput, WH-5420CPE out-performanced many of its competitors. And it should be able to reach 35km without much difficulty.
